Fondly remember a night in August 1981. Took a free seat at a table in the front, armed with just purchased new albums by Richie Havens ("Connections") and Bob Dylan ("Shot of Love"). Picked on immediately by the MC who wanted to know why I was alone and wondered if I ever bought music by anybody born after 1945. I then proceeded to tell him that I could do a mean impression of Dylan clearing his throat (I had heard this on a live Jose Feliciano album) which got more laughs than the MC. He decided to leave me alone.

Also remember late into the show when a cop car pulled up to the curb which naturally gave the stand up (wish I can remember who was on the bill - it was August 1981) plenty of ammo to ad-lib. While he was yakking the smiling cops turned their search light on which lit up the entire club, whie breaking it up as well. Great times.

I was a 22 year old kid away from home in Montreal travelling extensively for the first time and fell in love with SF the moment I stepped off the train. I've been trying to get back for over 30 years.

I won't ever forget my evening at The Other Cafe.

Cheers

My wife I went to the Other many times in the early eighties. I remember all the main players and especially the time that Will Durst did a stand-up marathon and by the second day was snorting coke on stage (or at least going through the motions, can't verify if it was real). I also remember a female comedian who I initially thought was one of the weirdest people I'd ever seen, named Kat Hollerbach I believe. After seeing her a few times I came to think she was a comedy genius. Never heard about her after that and always wondered what happened to her.

I remember the car that drove through the door. I was the doorman that night, and was sitting right there! I can even give you details of the guy that did it (though I don't know why). His name was Bob Bascom and he drove a dark green Honda Civic with Oregon plates. I think Rick Reynolds was emceeing that night. Miraculously, all the shattered glass went flying down the walkway/aisle inside the club, and no one was hurt.

I was so sad when this little neighborhood venue closed. It was such a funky yet intimate and personal place to be in. How great to see Dana Carvey juggling eggplant, bowling ball and an egg or Bob Sarlatte or Will Durst's political railings. We always left laughing and couldn't wait for the next show. Folk artists also were showcased, I think Jean Redpath comes to mind. The Other Cafe truly was an institution, and other than the Holy City Zoo, which had was more of a bar, there was nothing else quite like it in SF.

I had moved to San Francisco around 1980 and lived in the 19th and Judah area. Not having much money, I was always looking for a deal. I discovered Monday night at the Other for, I think,$1! A bargain for an evening of great up-and- coming comedians.
My favorite was the host Paula Poundstone. I can remember her comments about the "house cola", cats, and pop tarts, among other.
It was just had a great place to laugh and be with friends. Everyone felt part of the Other.
I live up in the Sierra Foothills now,and my son has now moved to SF and is jealous of my living in those wonderful times.

We were privileged...the Other was our neighborhood fun spot -- Terence and I walked down after dinner to check out Jane or Paula, Robin or Screamin' Bob -- they were all there either hanging or cracking us up. Good times.

The first time I went to the Other Cafe was to see (and I couldn't possibly make this up} Bobby Slayton open for Dr. Timothy Leary. Had to be way late 1980 or way early 1981. There was some hippie chick there who kept playing Bob Dylan music from a player in her backpack while Bobby was on stage until someone {probably Bob Ayers} finally tossed her out. Little did I know that within the year I'd be on that same stage. Have a great reunion show!
